Hippo hammer mills rapidly grind a wide variety of materials from grain, beans, herbs and fibrous roots to minerals, plastics, glass, bone and recyclables. Materials enter the milling chamber and are impacted by hammers rotating at high speed. Size reduction occurs until particles can exit through the holes of a perforated screen covering the discharge. Interchangeable screens offer hole sizes ranging from 0.6mm to 25mm.
As a result of hammer milling, in addition to particle size reduction some materials (glass bottles and lobster shells, for example) experience a high degree of bulk reduction, creating storage and transport efficiencies.

In use across the U.S. and around the world, South-African made Hippo mills are available with horsepower ratings of 5 to 150 hp. The Hippo Mammoth hammer mill can be purchased with a 3-phase electric motor of 100, 125 or 150 horsepower. Some of the most common uses of the Hippo Mammoth hammer mill include grinding grains such as wheat and corn, grinding industrial hemp, and hemp waste disposal by grinding hemp to smaller size particles and blending with other non-hemp materials for mulch.
Hippo hammer mills feature rigid hammers with reversible, replaceable tips of long wearing, impact and abrasion-resistant Bennox steel. The screen is located in the bottom half of the hammer mill chamber, covering an arc of about 180°. Milled material exits the mill below the screen. For finer particle grinding and to aid the movement of finer particles thru the mill screen and away from the mill, a separate air transport system can be configured from the discharge of the mill. This air transport system is available as a separate purchase option and consists of enclosed duct work, a material handling blower fan driven by a separate electric motor, a material collecting cyclone, a rotary valve driven by an electric motor on the collecting cyclone, and a dust bag separator.
Stock interchangeable screens for the Hippo Mammoth hammer mill are available with hole sizes of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 20 and 25mm. The top half of the milling chamber swings open for full access to the hammers and screen, and screens can be changed out in just 30 seconds without tools.
Hippo mills are manufactured to high precision standards, with non-cast components cut by laser or plasma for excellent fit. High quality bearings are used, and lubricated with quality synthetic lubricant.
